Amar Karia, NMPA Clinical Fellow for Obstetrics
The National Maternity and Perinatal Audit: Clinical Fellow for Obstetrics
In June 2021 I joined the NMPA as the obstetrics clinical fellow. Prior to this, I was an Academic Clinical Fellow at the University of Warwick, a ST4 Obstetrics and Gynaecology registrar at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, and previously an Academic Foundation Doctor in Stoke-on-Trent. My prior research experience relates to recurrent miscarriage, systematic reviews and variation in clinical practice. I have also completed a MSc in Health Research at the University of Warwick, passing with distinction.
Whilst bringing my clinical experience and knowledge to the team, to date I have been able to develop skills in data management and report writing with the NMPA. I have enjoyed being able to apply my clinical interpretation to national data, and generating meaningful conclusions that can empower women and inform clinicians. I look forward to help shaping future snapshot audits, developing skills in statistical coding, and undertaking epidemiological research which can impact the care of women across the country.
During my time at RCOG I have also been able to contribute to writing the RCOG COVID-19 guidance. I recognise the importance of the Royal College to clinicians and future leaders in women’s healthcare, and I am honoured to have the opportunity to provide a small contribution to RCOG output at such an early stage of my career.
